Taylor Swift and The Bolter: A Celebration of Women in Music

Jan 31, 2025

“Where words fail, music speaks.” What a beautiful line, right? We all as music lovers can feel this. In my understanding music is an emotion for a lot of us, it speaks the language of heart.

I think this is the reason why the music industry is growing enormously. There’s a song for every situation in which we adapt in active lifestyle.

Unlike this, we’re today discussing the global sensation and her new album. None other than Taylor Swift, a personality who needs no introduction.

If you’re too a Swiftie and followed the latest album called “The Tortured Poets Department” then you must have grooved on all 31 new songs by now.

In which “Fortnight” and “The Smallest Man That Ever Lived” are the classic ones. There is one song that offers the greatest insight into why Taylor Swift is a legend in her own way,  and that’s “The Bolter.” To know more, keep reading!

About Taylor Swift

The Bolter & Taylor Swift

See Merriam-Webster and she’ll tell you what bolter is, “a horse given to running away” or “a person who ends his or her relationship with a political party.”

With the internet, you can easily reach a book by Frances Osborne, who’s the great-granddaughter of Idina Sackville. One of the most popular bolters is what has been depicted as an “age of bolters.”

Sackville is popular for leaving her luxurious rich husband and two kids for a “penniless army officer” in 1918. She married and bolted minimum five relationships in her lifetime.

Sackville is a 20’s product, where flappers, banning, and jazz manipulated, yet she still was out of it. Divorce was prohibited, making marriage and family a high-level crime.

The Bolter & Taylor Swift

In 1920, divorce was considered a serious crime where often women’s intents were interrogated. The divorce rate back then was 8.0 per 1,000 married women aged 15 and above.

Though the numbers were increasing only 0.8 percent of married women were divorced in 1920.

As living in the modern era you might be wondering that what Sackville did is unlike other bolters, but in that time it was a brave move.

These historical stories of mischievous women give a sudden instinctive reaction. We believe it’s only women’s job to behave in a certain manner or to keep everyone together.

We blame them for breaking rules of good behavior. “How could they?” high society barge in. The names and images of weird women are defamed with the way to maintain status.

Such high crimes and wrongdoing are the result of being bold and female in the early 20th century. We have grown, right? The judgement is still passed easily.

See the recent news from New York’s highest court determining Harvey Weinstein was behaved biased because multiple sexual assault victims assert in his case.

“These historical stories of mischievous women give an instant knee-jerk reaction. We shame women who break rules of good behavior.”

Time and again, structures that impose traditional top-down, listen-don’t speak environments suppress revolution and talent. These realities unequally affect individuals with lesser power.

This is how the magic of music is elevated by Swift’s lyrical power and her musical poetry is as authentic as it is, so meaningful and inspiring to multiple individuals.

From mainstream storylines, the underdog voices are mostly missing, but in the case of “The Bolter,” she’s the only one who has seen through the eyes of larger society as dishonest, ironic, and also mentally disturbed.

Swift confesses this in a song, but then she does something in a very unique pleasant way: She turned the traditional societal storyline script in a naughty suspicious move, to the perspective of an individual wanting more.

She narrates the point of view of the actor—the bolter in this case by saying, “As she was leaving, it felt like breathing.” She was restrained by the role she was asked to play by the demanding society, leaving felt like getting her life again.

As from Swift’s perspective “The Bolter” is a woman who fails to fit in traditional society. Swift became the voice of Bolter, whose story was unheard till now.

She wasn’t a woman interested in being a trophy wife for the crowd to admire. She got her own desires, preferences, and demands to full fill, but her hopes and dreams are choked by the rules that others want her to play. She wasn’t willing to give herself to play this role.

Swift herself was not happy to be a part of such a role that society and even her fans believed in.

The only role she wants to play is what assigns to herself, driven particularly by her own wants and desires. This is what we call Bold, Amazing, and Freeing!

In 2017, she achieved a countersuit trial against a Colorado DJ convicted of fumbling after she was actually sued by him due to his job loss.

In 2019, when her masters were sold without her permission, and has been re-recording and re-releasing all of them as Taylor’s Version. She was not even happy to accept her music industry fate.

She repeatedly stands for herself, keeps her perspective loudly, and inspires others to be so courageous and earn respect.

At this stage, the hidden became apparent: yes! Swift is The Bolter. We can’t restrict her to play roles that we think she should play.

No amount of angry dads, Brads, and Chads can modify her behavior, indulging coming up to support her loved ones at their workplace.

She was and she is true to herself and will continue to express her own stories using her powerful voice. This feeling is really precious that someone’s story or voice can inspire multiple individuals.

She’s here to support all underdog voices of the new generation. If she can, why can’t you bolt.

I hope your time with us is worth reading and you understand the power of music and how it can inspire so many out there and bring charm in their eyes.

Taylor Swift’s albums are always admired by the audience all around the globe. The idea of having a back story of a song really hit the mark. This is the reason why her name is so huge!
